Dr. Dana Maryse Shapero
Clinical Psychologist, Founder and Executive Director
It is difficult for individuals to find an environment in which they can openly discuss the struggles that they are enduring. This tends to be even more true for children and adolescents. I work to facilitate an environment in which individuals can feel safe, supported, and understood, tailoring the dynamics within each session to meet each individual's unique needs. I then utilize an integrative approach - founded in Evidence Based Therapies - to specifically attend to each individual's experience so that they can most successfully overcome the obstacles that they are facing in their lives.
After attaining my Bachelors of Education, I completed both my Masters and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology - specializing in work with children and adolescents. I truly enjoy working with this population, as well as with young adults, and helping each individual realize that, together, we can overcome the obstacles they're facing - and that there truly is hope.
I completed my internship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, where I received specialized intensive training in working with children and adolescents struggling with eating disorders (using Maudsley's FBT approach in inpatient, day program, and outpatient settings) and individuals struggling with OCD. After moving to Michigan, I worked at the Center for Eating Disorders in Ann Arbor and as a consultant for the Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital prior to going off on my own to establish Simply Become, PLLC.
I currently collaborate closely with Beaumont's Hough Center and University of Michigan's Partial Hospitalization and Outpatient Programs, as well as many local pediatricians.

Mordy
Our Therapy Pup
Mordy is Simply Become's trained, hypoallergenic, therapy dog. He is a Havapoo (3/4 toy poodle and 1/4 Havanese) and loves providing emotional support and comfort to patients in the practice.
Research shows that, for most people, the presence of an animal prompts the body to release serotonin, prolactin, and oxytocin. These neurotransmitters and hormones generate a sense of relaxation and have been shown to help people relax during therapy. Further, research shows that having a dog present in a therapeutic environment can lead to increased communication, increased self-esteem, and increased willingness to disclose difficult experiences.
Mordy specializes in helping "break the ice" at the onset of therapy and he has been amazing at helping reduce individuals' initial resistance to treatment. During sessions, Mordy is happy to either sit in the corner of the room in his "place" or snuggle up, with your permission.
